Struggle for Justice

Rizwanur Rahman, who had married Priyanka Todi without her parents' consent on August 18 under the Special Marriage Act, was found dead beside the railway tracks near Dum Dum at 10.30 am on Friday — barely 20 minutes after he fixed up an appointment with a human rights activist for a visit to Lalbazar.

He had earlier sought police protection, which he never got.

In a complaint he had filed with the Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) just two days before his death, Rahman had claimed two deputy commissioners of police posted at the Lalbazar headquarters had threatened to arrest him if Priyanka did not return to her parents. A copy of his letter was submitted to the state human rights commission.

Rahman's death triggered anger in Tiljala, where he lived. On Saturday, thousands of residents of Park Circus and surrounding localities took to the streets. They blocked bridge no. 4, the critical link to the Park Circus-EM Bypass connector, demanding a probe into the death.

The protesters vented their anger on the police. They were particularly furious that officers of Karaya police station had refused to accept an FIR filed by Rahman's parents. Rumours that the body had gone missing from police custody further inflamed the protesters, who went on the rampage, torching a police jeep and wrecking nine other vehicles. The police lathicharged the mob, which retaliated with brickbats. The street fights continued for over an hour.

Bhadra has demanded an impartial probe into the case and asked the police to immediately produce Rahman's "missing wife". Priyanka's whereabouts are still unknown. Repeated attempts to contact Todi both at his residence and on his cellphone failed.

This is an horrible incident of violation of human rights. The police instead of protecting the couple acted like the private security guards of Todi. Its a shame on their part.

Usually in villages leaders charge for monetary compensation when some intercaste marriage happens. But Kolkata is so liberal that its police has eliminated one party to get rid of such troubles. Congrats to police commissioner and his team for such wonderful murder! And some Biman Bose, a political party leader has explained though they compelled Priyanka not to stay with her husband, the police didn't even know about their marriage. Sooooooo cute!

I am a Muslim woman married to a longtime Hindu boyfriend. We have two kids and we teach them the good things in both Islam and Hinduism. As a Muslim woman (though I have not converted to Hinduism, our children are Hindus), I feel we should change our mindset. Had the Muslims behaved the same way had a Muslim girl married a Hindu boy? As a Muslim woman I know, what kind of difficulties I had to face. Today, I am disowned by my own parents. Why do Muslims have different scales for same incidents? My parents were unable to find a single qualified groom for me. I come from an Ansari family, and most of the prospective grooms that my father thought of, were not so well educated. I just want to say that I love my Hindu husband, and the culture he carries with him. Good and bad are evry where, but as a Muslim I feel our religion needs reformation. We have too many fundamentalists in our faith.

Haseena you have mistaken. Islam does not need any reformation. The fundamentalists found today are not the same as the true Islamic fundamentslists which the prophet rised.
An Islamic fundamentalist is a pure peace lover and he can do anything but can not leave his Imaan. God gave us mind and thinking capacity to recognise him this is what vedas also say. No hindu follows vedas correctly in the present day. Dayananada saraswati, a great vedic scholar who followed vedas perfectly always opposed idol worship and he always believed in one formless God. There are lot of resemblences in vedas and Quran. the vcarious places vedas stres that worshiping Fire, water, air (panch bhoota) and other things cxreated by the God will never enter the paradise. But many hindu brothers do not know it. because they do not read vedas.
Even animals are loving, faithful and honest. they eat till they satisfy their hunger and live in small biut of land which is required for them. Humans are greedy and try to save everything for themselves without giving anything to the needy. The point is God gave us mind to recognise him and to turn to him. Not to use our intellects to improve worldy pleasures. Qur'an is the one last world of ALLAH for the mankind for eternity. The one who follows is perfectly will never repent in this world or in the hear after. Anyway Islam does not need any reformation. It is muslims who need reformation.
